Justifier for Hire

Ok, I realize I'm unemployed. But this Libertine dress. I mean, come on, look at it... LOOK AT IT!
If I could make a living justifying purchases, I'd be hired in a sec and very, very rich.

I have taken it upon myself to compile the top 10 list of why it was OK for me to buy this dress in my current jobless state. Partly because I have lots of time on my hands, and partly because my mother is going to call within minutes of this post to lecture me.

1. It was 70% off. That is reason enough really.
2. It's "green." It's a vintage dress that was re-purposed. How politically correct!
3. It's one of a kind. That always seals a deal for me. It even walked down the runway! (see pic)
4. It was a nice sale for my buddy Addysen at Saks. How generous I am!
5. I need an interview dress now. (Not really, but it sounds good.)
6. It's warm and I'm a cold cookie here in the 51 degrees of NYC.
7. It's going to make me a hit at Fashion Week on Thursday.
8. I can shoot a model in it and then it becomes tax deductible. Yessssssss.
9. It was my final farewell to my Saks discount.
10. I wanted it. LOOK AT IT! and check the dopey grin it put on my face :)

Tuni had a great Haute Hippie necklace that was a fur collar with loads of gold chains hanging from it. It costs a small fortune so I decided to make my own. Voila!
I had this leopard collar from an antique store hidden away for years. I found it and attached my chain necklace from Rapz with safety pins. I arrived at work and the seamstress asked how I made it. I showed her and she immediately set to sewing it proper-like for me.

These are so great. I got them at Burdine's about 20 years ago....when retail workers were forced to wear pantyhose. I, of course, wore fishnets and weird tights that I dug up at strange stores like Stein Mart. I still have them and they have no holes or runs! I wish they had a tag so I could see who made them. I would hunt some more down on ebay.
The weather is so warm today, 50 degrees! I know Mitch is horrified, but I love it because I can dump my wool coat and wear my sportin' trench.
Also my lame sister pointed out that I don't need a new outfit every time I want to blog, but I can reblog new combos. Ugh. That's no fun, but I'll go with it, as I am running out of shopping funds with this NYC rent thing...

Working 6 days a week is pretty strenuous and leaves little time for blogging. Not sure when I'll become independently wealthy and not have to work, but I hope it's relatively soon!
So today I am blogging both outfits from the days previous.
First is my guy, Gary Graham. It's been awhile and this is a great sweater dress from his fall collection. H&M tights and Marni shoes and a Uniqlo heattech tee complete the deal.
Second is an old dress from Tuni by some cheapo designer who knocks off other expensive designers. Well, ok, then. Mitch thinks this is a Balenciaga knock off. Cool! It's like parachute material and just a really short bag dress. I adore it. More H&M tights in olive green and my Stuart Weitzman leopard boots from Bergdorf last year, along with another Uniqlo heattech (my staples for layering! and only $19.95!)
The ladies at Saks make me come over and show them my outfits every day so there is a big pressure not to disappoint!

Two greats in one outfit, as different as they are....such as Stevie Wonder's surprise visit to the Lil Wayne show in Canada. Yes, I am still living vicariously through my super cool boyfriend who is currently on tour with the aforementioned Weezy.
Anyway, back in Brooklyn, another Junya skirt was added to the collection, from the nautical spring collection. It has sailor buttons (they really work!) on the front and the front hem is shorter than the back. It's pretty much the dopest nautical skirt ever.

The Alexander McQueen top has a frayed jabot and is the most luscious ivory silk. They are both coups from the Saks Consolidation Sale. Word!
My new Ikea wardrobe makes a great background for outfit shooting so hopefully I won't slack so much.

Today I visited the jeweler who made the ring that I cannot stop thinking about. A white enamel scorpion clutching a small ruby, as if to say "Just try and get this from my grasp." Many jewelers and designers have taken to macabre subjects, such as bugs, bones, and skulls, but Nora Kogan of St. Kilda gives them poetic justice & just a bit of pixie dust. My love of neon was only stoked by her fiery shades of acid yellow, red & cobalt, combined with gorgeous stones that look to be plucked right out of the earth, without precise cutting and fussing. The store itself was a trip to another land, inviting and exotic, and Nora, well, she was a pure joy, with that Aussie accent and captivating personality. Her story is a great one, and it's on her site, so I didn't bother with an "interview" here. I just wanted to post some photos and sing her praises all the day long.
She & I took turns modeling the rings with our bright nail polishes chipped to hipness. She did the scorpion for herself in all diamonds, retailing for about what a nice used Lexus would run you. But who would want a dumb car when you could have a diamond-encrusted scorpion "living" on your finger?

i was so tired of all my tights in a box all mushed together so i couldn't find them! i hung this dorky clothesline in my room so i can see them all! i love tights! (even though i suck at putting them on)

there is a funny story about the tights on the far right. they are ACNE, and so cool. they are called tantra leggings, but they are stirrup tights. i was on a blog and they were dissing these so bad. i was like, wait those are the coolest tights ever. i followed the link to shopbop.com and bought them immediately! i guess i'm just a lil different. they were originally $200, which was part of the gripes online but by the time i found them, they were on sale for $50. they only had XS left, which i am NOT, but i squeeze into them just fine.

oh exciting day! not only is it sunny and 55 out, Adam got a new bike! he is beyond thrilled and immediately covered it in skate stickers.
i am thrilled at my new Uniqlo layering tee in stripes. paired with my cavalli skirt, it's a DO! shoes by Delman, tights H&M, vintage purse and locket, JKC bangles

it's a tough one to wear head-to-toe Gary Graham every day to work, even though he's my favorite designer ever. i grabbed these things from the sample closet to try out. the skirt is also a top & the leggings are such a fun print. not things i would normally buy so it was fun to try to make them into a Coco outfit. hair in the face is a blessing, trust me. it's still early!

super cool cross body bag made by a REAL native American. this is my Christmas 2010 present from my Pa. what a good job he did! he shops at the Soulard Farmer's Market in St. Louis, where you can buy 50 lbs. of onions for $1! it's a pretty special place. one time he bought a small lizard there but he found a green potato chip several months later and that was a tragedy.

i have been a tomboy most of my life, except that small chunk of time where i wanted to wear a spangly ice skating outfit all day when i was six after seeing the Ice Capades show. i wasn't going for the military look because i buck rather than follow trends, BUT....this Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garcons shorts-skirt changed my mind. ruffly yet boyish, it stole my heart the moment i saw it. once i put it on, i was doomed. it finally went on sale, though it is still one of my priciest designer pieces. it's my first Comme piece as well! first as in, i hope there are many more! it's timeless for sure and i guarantee i'll be a whacky old woman wearing it around town, but with maybe a pink chubby instead of boyish accoutrements.

Mitch and I attended this soiree in Soho on a rainy Tuesday evening. I wore my Club Monaco Francois the frenchman sweater with my ball skirt and a vintage rabbit coat. My new Wang bag swung happily cross body.
Mitch had on his newly Banana Republic tailored suit, & a plaid tie with a safety pin from the drugstore as a tie bar. Tie bar to die for! He's so creative, I just couldn't live without him.
The windows were decked out beautifully and there was a giant crystal column by the staircase that was mesmerizing!
I have a new point-and-shoot camera I'm trying out since my big ole rig is so heavy and it was raining. I think it did pretty well!

this Alexander Wang belt/corset/je n'est c'est pas thing was a MUST on my recent buying spree. i had been eyeing it for months. finally got it! it really brings a touch of something extra to anything you pair it with! i love it with this Target boy's shirt. a wife beater would also be great! even some of my dresses will benefit from its waist-cinching power! it's like the bottom part of a menswear vest with buttons. ingenius! ah the Wang....

sometimes a piece is so stunning, it is not just a "buy," it's an "acquisition!" such is the case with my new Leifsdottir skirt. i passed by it on the rack, seeing the $850 price tag, and knowing it was too much for such an extravagant piece. then later, i found out it was from summer and would be marked down! lo and behold, it rang up to $180! yesssssssss. my day was made, and i knew a blog would soon follow.
i dressed down it's flamenco-sensibility with a ladylike J. Crew camel cashmere crew and an Hermes Twilly scarf. pearls by my girl, Jenn Fenton, of course! Pedro Garcia leopard kitten heels.
i probably should wait and wear this for an "event" but i'm sure i'll end up at work in it! :)
